The Tisch School of the Arts is located in New York City's Greenwich Village, a vibrant, diverse, and dynamic neighborhood bustling with activity 24 hours a day. Primarily a residential area, the Village has played an important role in the intellectual history of New York as a home to writers and artists of many eras. Today this atmosphere remains as students exchange ideas at outdoor cafés and browse specialty shops and bookstores. The Village also attracts tourists from all over the world who are drawn to its many theatres and jazz clubs, its rich history and colorful culture.
Most Tisch students are not from the New York area and so exploring the city is one of the most exciting experiences that new students share. A significant portion of fall orientation is devoted to educating students about New York, its mass transit system, its neighborhoods, and its arts resources. Students quickly learn their way around the restaurants, galleries, shops, theatres, film houses, clubs, and museums of Greenwich Village, SoHo, TriBeCa, and the city's other neighborhoods.
There are dozens of science, history, fine art and resource museums throughout New York City, including the International Center for Photography, which offers a wide range of fine art, commercial, documentary and new technology images; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which houses one the world's largest collections of fine art; the Museum of Television and Radio, a great place for screenings and resources; and the Guggenheim Museum, a unique structure that is a work of art in itself. Students may also frequent libraries, galleries, and studios on their own or as part of a class or research assignment.
One of the city's greatest assets is its diversity. From uptown Harlem to downtown SoHo, residents have access to a vast array of ethnic restaurants, festivals, and neighborhoods. Students enjoy exploring the treasures of Little Italy, Chinatown, and Little India - all within walking distance of NYU.
New York City also has inexpensive public transportation to nearby areas, including the beautiful beaches of Long Island and New Jersey, and the mountains and rural historic towns of New York State and southern New England.
Two good sources for finding out what's happening in the city are The New York Times, particularly the Friday and Sunday editions, and The Village Voice, a free weekly newspaper that is published on Wednesdays and online on Tuesdays.
One of the perks of being part of the Tisch community is frequently hearing about and getting invited to special events, performances, screenings, and exhibits through the school and its departments. In addition, the NYU Ticket Central Box Office often has discount coupons for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows.
